CARE OF
Braces can become traps for food and bacteria. In order to keep your teeth clean and free from decay and plaque it is important to brush a minimum of 3 times a day. Using your toothbrush on an angle and brushing in a circular motion will remove any food debris and placque that has accumulated since your last brushing. You should spend at least 3 minutes brushing your teeth. We will evaluate your brushing at each visit and let you know area's you need to pay more attention to. Good brushing is a good habit for a lifetime. Flossing should be done at least 2 times a week. You will have to use floss threaders to feed the floss above the wire. We will show you how to use the floss threaders effectively. Although rare, some patients whose brushing is poor can develop decalcification, or white spots, around the brackets. This results from bacteria that is not removed from the tooth which can start eating away at the enamel. This does not happen overnight. It is the result of very poor brushing and oral hygiene throughout treatment. Rest assured, we will work together to identify those patients who's brushing is not effective. We may prescribe an over the counter fluoride rinse or in more serious cases, a prescription formula fluoride.
IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CONTINUE SEEING THE HYGIENIST FOR PROFESSIONAL CLEANINGS AT LEAST EVERY 6 MONTHS. IN SOME CASES MORE FREQUENT CLEANINGS MAY BE PRESCRIBED.
